Veterans, Families, and Dogs Invited to Scenic Lake Mead ‘Warrior Hike’ on March 7

A community-led “Warrior Hike” is set to take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the iconic Historic Railroad Trail near Lake Mead.

The event begins at 8:45 AM with a meet-up in the parking lot below the Lake Mead Visitor Center, before stepping off promptly at 9:00 AM for what organizers describe as an easy but meaningful trek through one of Southern Nevada’s most striking landscapes.

The route follows the well-maintained and largely flat Historic Railroad Trail, a roughly 7.5-mile round-trip walk that features five massive, century-old railroad tunnels carved into the desert hills.

Protect Your Pet with Odie Pet Insurance

Odie offers customizable pet insurance and wellness plans that help cover vet bills for accidents, illnesses, and routine care.

Originally built to support the construction of the Hoover Dam, the tunnels now frame sweeping views of Lake Mead’s blue waters and rugged canyon walls.

It is widely considered one of the most accessible scenic hikes in the region, making it suitable for a broad range of fitness levels.

Dogs are welcome on leash, making this a dog-friendly outing for veterans, families, and supporters who prefer not to leave their pups behind.

With its wide gravel path and gentle incline, the trail is particularly well-suited for leashed dogs comfortable walking longer distances.

Participants are encouraged to move at their own pace, with front and rear guides helping ensure that no one is left behind — humans and dogs alike.

Discover Your Dog’s Breed, Family, and History

The Embark Breed ID Test screens for 400+ dog breeds with up to 99% accuracy, giving you a detailed breakdown of your dog’s ancestry.

At the halfway point, hikers will pause for a moment of reflection. Those walking in memory of a loved one are invited to bring a small item, photo, or flag as a personal tribute.

Organizers are urging participants to come prepared.

Plenty of water (for both you and your dog) sun protection, and sturdy hiking shoes are considered essential.

Pet owners are also advised to bring waste bags and be mindful of desert conditions as temperatures can rise quickly even in early March.

Flags are encouraged, no RSVP is required, and the event is free to attend.

The meeting point is listed near 17 Lake Shore Road in Henderson, at the Historic Railroad Trail parking lot below the Lake Mead Visitor Center, with GPS coordinates 36.0096, -114.79711.
